Planning for Melbourne’s Activity Centres
UrbanFold has worked with multiple councils across Melbourne to plan for housing growth and context-sensitive development around the proposed activity centres. In one municipality we undertook a dwelling yield study assessing potential housing distribution, development capacity and the potential outcomes in the Train and Tram Zone catchments. This informed how new housing targets could be achieved and distributed across the municipality.
In another, we worked with Council to create rapid place-based responses to State housing targets through ‘Structure Plan Lite’ frameworks. These outlined preferred built form outcomes and tested growth scenarios on both key sites and broader areas beyond the State-identified centres. This included consideration of heritage character accessibility and liveability to support more evenly distributed housing and balanced urban growth.
We have also prepared density testing in areas immediately surrounding infrastructure projects like the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) and Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) helping councils assess development potential and shape advocacy positions. The work combines strategic analysis scenario testing and urban design to deliver practical context-sensitive growth strategies for Melbourne’s Activity Centres.
