Designing with Country

UrbanFold in collaboration with JCB has worked with Djaara (the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation) and Affordable Housing Solutions to develop a masterplan for a five-hectare site in White Hills Bendigo. The project aims to deliver culturally informed socially inclusive and affordable housing for the local Indigenous community addressing the impacts of the housing crisis while creating broader community benefits.

The Plan integrates a mix of housing typologies and high-quality open space ensuring that residents can connect with both the landscape and each other. Urban design and landscape strategies embed principles of “Designing with Country” recognising cultural identity supporting community cohesion and reinforcing connections to the land. By combining cultural sensitivity high-quality urban design and housing delivery the project provides a replicable model for culturally-led place-based housing initiatives.
